Is there an easy way to remove empty maildir directories?

I looked at the documentation before I asked.

I ask again: why does $save_empty remove empty mailboxes only of certain 
types? (It removes single files, does not remove trees.)

If the answer is that trees take too long, has the time been measured? 
Measured in, say, the last ten years?
