Can mutt be persuaded to use a sensible maildir hierarchy?

Starting in Mutt 1.12, there is a new function <descend-directory> in
the browser menu. This can be used to force Mutt to enter a directory
that is also a maildir mailbox.

One possible usage might be to bind enter/return to descend directory
and space to select the entry:

   bind browser <enter> descend-directory
   bind browser <return> descend-directory
   bind browser <space> select-entry
