Thanks for the update!

I took a look at the Kubuntu 19.10 src package, but it looks very 
lightly patched.  I can't see anything that would cause the problems you 
were having, nor can I remember any kind of fixes that have taken place 
related to buffy since then.  It's a mystery.

I'm glad your problems have disappeared, but please keep me posted if 
you figure anything else out in the future.
