I am having a similar issue when viewing html attachments with chromium.
This command:

  xdg-open mutt-mimomedia-1000-10945-13086124291664314301

used to open the file as html. Now, it opens the file as text: it adds a
<pre> tag at the beginning of the file as shown in chromium dev toots.
xdg-mime recognises the file as text/html:

  % xdg-mime query filetype mutt-mimomedia-1000-10945-13086124291664314301
  text/html

  % xdg-mime query default text/html
  chromium-browser-chromium.desktop

Renaming the file and issuing the same command:

  xdg-open mutt-mimomedia-1000-10945-13086124291664314301.html

opens de file as html. This is what I have in the .mailcap file.

  text/html; xdg-open %s &; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"; needsterminal;

I wonder if some setting in chromium/chrome has been changed.

Cheers!
