I've pushed up a branch kevin/index-format-c to gitlab for discussion.

It adds four config vars:
  $size_show_bytes      (default unset)
  $size_show_mb         (default set)
  $size_show_fractions  (default set)
  $size_units_on_left   (default unset)

The patch is still work-in-progress, meaning I need to clean up the 
documentation and test it a bit more.

I'd appreciate feedback (except, not of the "there are already too many 
config vars" variety).
